Each dspstak™ consists of two or more modules:

Danville Signal's dspstak™ Engines are available for latest Analog Devices SHARC® family processors. The modules generally consist of a DSP processor, memory, power supplies and standard digital I/O such as RS-232 and USB.

The I/O Modules may include signal conditioning electronics, A/D and/or D/A converters, audio transceivers, unique connectors and a plethora of other special front end requirements.

Since the I/O dspstak™ module is separate from the DSP module, custom interfaces can be created quickly and inexpensively.

Painless Development!

Danville has several platforms of dspstak DSP Engines. Each platform is supported by a dspstak DSP Engine with ICE. The ICE is a licensed version of Analog Devices' EZ-KIT Lite debugger and is fully supported by Analog Devices Visual DSP++. This means that you can treat a dspstak just like a EZ-KIT Lite development board and then move directly to a production version of the same board.

The dspstak DSP Engine with ICE is supported by a free KIT license of Visual DSP++ with exactly the same functionality as an Analog Devices EZ-KIT. All dspstak DSP Engines can also take advantage of the full featured Visual DSP++ tools and the Analog Devices HPUSB & USB emulators. We resell these tools if you are interested.

All dspstak DSP Engines include flash memory to store program code. Bootable program code can be uploaded into the flash by either USB or RS-232 without the need for any special programming tools.

The dspstak™ 21469 family of DSP boards are high performance digital signal processing engines based on Analog Devices fourth generation ADSP-21469 SHARC® DSP. This SHARC supports 32 bit fixed point and 32/40 bit floating point formats with SIMD instructions running at up to 450 MHz. This translates to a peak computation rate of 2.7 GFLOPS.

The core signal processing engine of the dspstak 21469 is a dspblok 21469 module. This module includes a 1Gb DDR2 SDRAM, flash and eprom memory. Since the core is dspblok based, it is possible to create other dspstak versions with the same base. You may wish to review the dspblok™ product page for more information.

The ADSP-21469 has very flexible peripherals including up to eight independent serial ports (SPORTs), two SPI ports, TWI (I2C), and two UARTs. The dspstak™ Interconnect Port supports the complete DAI interface, SPI, general I/O, clocks and power connections.

The dspstak 21469 includes an RS-232 interface and a high speed USB 2.0 interface. There is driver support for most popular OS's including Windows, Linux and Mac. The USB drivers can emulate a COM port. You can use a simple terminal program to communicate with the dspstak 21469 including uploading application code to flash. There is also a Windows DLL for integration into your application.

The dspstak 21469 with ICE version uses a dspblok 21469+ICE module which includes a built-in Analog Devices' EZ-KIT Lite debugger. It is supported by Analog Devices Visual DSP++ 5.0. You can use the debugger with either an EZ-Kit license (free) or a full Visual DSP license. You can also connect an Analog Devices HPICE via JTAG connections.

Optional Accessories for the dspstak 21469 Family

JTAG Adapterdspstak DSP JTAG Adapter

Danville JTAG connectors are smaller than the standard ADI recommended JTAG header. The Danville DSP JTAG Adapter converts the Danville JTAG header used to the Analog Devices JTAG connector standard.

The dspstak™ c192k48 is a 4 channel audio ADC & 8 channel DAC I/O Module based on an Analog Devices AD1938 sigma delta audio codec. It supports sampling rates as high as 192kHz. You can stack up to four dspstak c192k48 boards to create channel counts as high as 16 in and 32 out. Each channel samples synchronously even in multiboard configurations.

The c192k48 has 10dB stepped PGAs for inputs with a range of 0 to +30dB. It accepts a full scale signal of 2V RMS and outputs the same.

Due to the high number of connections, the inputs and outputs are brought out on a 34 pin latching header. You can use a standard ribbon cable to connect to an external system or you can use one of the dspstak balanced or single ended extenders.

Options and Accessories for the dspstak™ c192k48 I/O Module

dspstak™ c192k48 - Opt 1 (P/N A.04080-1)

The dspstak™ c192k48 Opt 1 is a stackable version of the c192k48 that when combined with another standard c192k48, creates a higher channel count composite system. For example, an 8 input/16 output system could use one dspstak c192k48 and one dspstak c192k48 - Opt 1.

dspstak™ c192k48 - Extender Boards (Unbalanced)

c192k48 Unbalanced ExtenderThe c192k48 Extender boards fan out the c192k48 connections to either BNC connectors or 6.3mm (1/4") phone jacks. Each extender card also provides a SPI expansion port (10 pin .100 box header). The SPI expansion port might be used as a control interface for front panel controls and indicators. Each board has additional digital I/O including two opto-isolated digital outputs. Some versions include an S/PDIF (AES 3id) interface and others opto-isolated inputs.

Versions are as follows:

  • dspstak c192k48 Extender - BNC - S/PDIF - Primary (P/N A.04090-1)

    This extender is used for audio applications since it includes an S/PDIF (AES 3id) interface. The S/PDIF transceiver is provided by the SHARC DSP so there may only be one of these cards in a multichannel system.

  • dspstak c192k48 Extender - BNC - Secondary (P/N A.04090-2)

    This extender is used for audio applications but excludes the S/PDIF (AES 3id) interface. It would be used in multicard systems.

  • dspstak c192k48 Extender - Phone - S/PDIF - Primary (P/N A.04090-3)

    This extender is used for audio applications since it includes an S/PDIF (AES 3id) interface. The S/PDIF transceiver is provided by the SHARC DSP so there may only be one of these cards in a multichannel system. The inputs can be configured to support electret microphones.

  • dspstak c192k48 Extender - Phone - S/PDIF - Primary (P/N A.04090-4)

    This extender is used for audio applications but excludes the S/PDIF (AES 3id) interface. It would be used in multicard systems. The inputs can be configured to support electret microphones.

  • dspstak c192k48 Extender - BNC - Digital I/O - Primary (P/N A.04090-5)

    This extender is used for industrial applications. It includes two opto-isolated inputs and two opto-isolated outputs.

  • dspstak c192k48 Extender - BNC - Digital I/O - Secondary (P/N A.04090-6)

    This extender is used for industrial applications. This board doesn't not include optoisolated inputs.

dspstak™ c192k48 - Balanced Audio Extender Boards

dspstak c192k48 Balanced ExtenderThe c192k48 Balanced Audio Extender boards fan out the c192k48 connections to a pair of DB-25F connectors. One connector is used for inputs, the other for outputs. Each connector is wired in to the defacto Tascam standard. The inputs are balanced and accept +4dBu (+22dBu FS) audio levels. THAT1206 balanced line receivers are used for their exceptional common mode rejection. Outputs are also balanced to provide +4dBU (+22dBU FS) levels. You can use the ground return for unbalanced applications.

Each extender card also provides a SPI expansion port (10 pin .100 box header). The SPI expansion port might be used as a control interface for front panel controls and indicators. There is also an digital I/O expansion connector on the board that is suitable for LEDs etc.

Versions are as follows:

  • dspstak c192k48 Balanced Extender - S/PDIF - Primary (P/N A.04091A-1)

    This extender includes an S/PDIF (AES 3id) interface. The S/PDIF transceiver is provided by the SHARC DSP so there may only be one of these cards in a multichannel system.

  • dspstak c192k48 Balanced Extender - Secondary (P/N A.04091A-2)

    This extender excludes the S/PDIF (AES 3id) interface.

Painless Development!

Danville has several platforms of dspstak DSP Engines. We recommend that you consider the dspstak 21479, 21489 or 21469 for new product development.  We continue to support our older dspstak boards, but since the newer dspstak boards are pin compatible, you may want to consider migrating your existing design. This is generally very straightforward and usually results in greater availabilty, improved performance and often better pricing.  

Most dspstak Engines are also supported with developement ("ICE") versions. The ICE is a licensed version of Analog Devices' EZ-KIT Lite debug agent and is fully supported by Analog Devices Visual DSP++ and Crosscore Studio. This means that you can treat a dspstak just like a EZ-KIT Lite development board and then move directly to a production version of the same board.

The dspstak DSP Engine with ICE is supported by a free KIT license of Visual DSP++ with exactly the same functionality as an Analog Devices EZ-KIT. The dspstak Digital I/O module provides optically isolated digital inputs and outputs to interface to external equipment. There are three standard variations of this module.

  • dspstak Digital I/O - 12 Input / 12 Output
  • dspstak Digital I/O - 8 Input / 16 Output
  • dspstak Digital I/O - 16 Input / 8 Output

Each version has 8 inputs that are active low and share a common positive return terminal.  Each version also has 8 outputs that are open collector with a common ground (emitter) return.

The remaining inputs and outputs are individually isolated. Two terminals are brought out for each input or output. Each input is essentially an LED and series resistor. The outputs are transistors with the collector and emitter exposed. This gives you more flexibility with your external interfacing requirements. 

All connections are brought out to a standard 34 pin latching header (0.100).

dspstak™ a9238 Two Channel High Speed ADC I/O Board

The dspstak a9238 is based on an Analog Devices' AD9238 A/D converter. This 12 bit ADC can sample as high 40M/s in single channel mode or 25M/s in dual channel mode. Since both channels are sampled synchronously, the dspstak a9238 is ideal for direct conversion or IF sampling receiver applications.

The dspstak a9238 takes advantage of the PDAP (parallel data acquisition port) of the third generation SHARC. The PDAP interface acts as a FIFO so that a block of samples can be acquired and then analyzed by the DSP.

The sampling clock is provided by an external clock or may be supplied by a low phase jitter programmable clock. An external trigger input is also available.

One of two input configurations are available. Transformer coupled inputs have lower noise and best isolation. Opamp style inputs (AD8138) are better suited for lower frequency operation and are DC coupled.

SMA connectors are used for all inputs.

dspstak™ a9248 Two Channel High Speed ADC & DAC I/O Board

The dspstak a9248 is based on an Analog Devices' AD9248 A/D converter. This 14 bit ADC can sample as high 40M/s in single channel mode or 25M/s in dual channel mode. Since both channels are sampled synchronously, the dspstak a9248 is ideal for direct conversion or IF sampling receiver applications.

The dspstak a9248 also includes a stereo sigma delta digital audio DAC (AKM AK4396). The DAC sample rate is programmable for sample rates as high as 216kHz.

dspstak™ DSP Engines

Danville has other dspstak DSP Engines available. These boards are still available but have been deemphasized since the introduction of our dspstak 214xx family of boards. We recommend the fourth generation ADSP-214xx based boards for new projects. We will continue to manufacture older dspstak DSP Engine boards for many years to support our customers with existing production requirements.

The dspstak™ S/PDIF transceiver I/O module can accept digital audio from either a fiber optic or coaxial input at data rates up to 192k. Four S/PDIF outputs are provided for multichannel digital audio applications.

The dspstak™ S/PDIF is based on an AKM AK4117 S/PDIF receiver and an AK4101A S/PDIF transmitter. The dspstak S/PDIF is compatible with the dspstak c192k48. This allows a multiple board dspstak to be created with digital and analog audio inputs and outputs.

The dspstak™ c96k44 is a 4 channel audio ADC & DAC I/O Module based on a pair of sigma delta stereo audio codecs, specifically the Wolfson WM8731 24 bit, 96kHz Stereo Audio Codec.

Assuming a 12.288MHz master clock, the c96k44 allows sampling rates from 8k to 96k. Other sampling rates are available by reprogramming the dspstak™ DSP Engine to another master clock frequency.

A special version of the c96k44 (Opt 1) is available that allows two dspstak™ c96k44 modules to be combined for 8 channel configurations all with synchronous sampling.

There are a number of additional accessory boards available for the dspstak™ c96k44 as well. These include a small power amplifier module, BNC extender boards and 6.3mm phone jack extender boards.

The dspstak™ c96k44 Option 1 is a stackable version of the c96k44 that when combined with another standard c96k44, creates an 8 channel composite system.

dspstak™ c96k44 - BNC Extender Board

Each extender board is designed to expand the latching header into 8 separate connectors. In the BNC case, the three wire microphone bias circuit is not available. The extender boards do not connect to the optional digital I/O, only the audio inputs and outputs are used.

In the standard version, a 20 pin right angle female dual row header connects directly to the latching header. The extender boards can also be supplied with a 20 pin latching header. This would also require a ribbon cable (34 pin to 20 pin for standard c96k44 boards) to connect the boards. The extender boards can also be assembled to use a mating DB-37M connector.

Each extender board is designed to expand the latching header into 8 separate connectors. The 6.3mm (1/4’) phone jack version can supply the microphone bias on the ring if desired. The extender boards do not connect to the optional digital I/O, only the audio inputs and outputs are used.

The dspstak c96k44 power amplifier plugs into two additional connectors that are added to the standard dspstak c96k44. Due to clearance restrictions, the power amplifier can only be installed on the top I/O module of a dspstak. This means that only one power amplifier module may be used in an eight channel dspstak c96k44 system.
